Castle dell'Ovo
Framed by the borgo marinaro and the porticciolo di Santa Lucia, the Castle dell'Ovo is one of the city’s most famous symbols. The small island of Megaride, on which it stands, is the place where the Cuman landed in the VII century to found the city. During the Roman period, the luxurious villa of Lucio Licinio Lucullo was built, though it was later turned into a fortress. New towers and fortifications were ordered by Frederick II, who chose the castle as repository of his treasure. During the Spanish rule it was turned into a prison, and Tommaso Campanella, Carlo Poerio and Luigi Settembrini were committed here. Today it hosts art exhibitions and events. The tuff barrel terrace displays a view of the entire gulf of Naples.

A magnificent jewel of tufa (a variety of limestone), the castle is characterized by its 6-pointed star-shaped structure. Today, the enchanting walls of the castle house the Soprintendenza ai Beni artistici, the Biblioteca Bruno Molajoli and the new Museo del Novecento, as well as important events and shows.

PALACES

 Napoli

Museo di Palazzo Reale
The museum is set in the 17th century palace built by the architect Domenico Fontana, who had the task of building a residence for the King of Spain.  Most of the ancient rooms are marvelously decorated and embellished with paintings, statues, hangings and antique furnishings. The 17th century art plays an important role in the decoration of the ceilings with frescoes of historical subjects that are still visible. Among the most suggestive rooms of the Palace are the Teatrino di Corte (Court small theatre), an 18th century work by Ferdinando Fuga, and the 17th century Cappella reale (Royal Chapel) that hosts the permanent exhibition “Sacred Art in the Palace.”
